Why Should You Do the PADI Rescue Diver Course?
A lot of divers shy away from the PADI Rescue Diver Course. I believe it’s because the word “Rescue” brings up images of worst-case scenarios—something most of us would rather not think about when we picture scuba diving.
After all, diving is about crystal-clear visibility, warm waters, colorful coral, and curious fish. Nobody signs up for scuba to imagine emergencies. But the reality is that scuba diving, like any adventure sport, comes with inherent risks.
In my 35 years of diving, I have unfortunately been in situations where divers did need help. Some were minor, some were serious. Unequivocally, because of my rescue diver training, I know I was able to stop many situations from escalating and prevent countless potential accidents before they even became problems.
Every time you get on a dive boat—especially if you don’t regularly dive with that group—there’s a possibility you may have to help another diver. Whether you’re prepared or not, whether you want to or not, you might be involved.
Here’s the point: you may think of yourself as a confident, safe diver, but we never dive alone. You’re not the only pawn on the chessboard, and you don’t always control the next move.
That’s the real strength of the PADI Rescue Diver Course—it’s not about emergencies, it’s about prevention, awareness, and confidence. When you develop those skills, you don’t just protect yourself—you make every dive team you join stronger and safer.
